If you’re exhausted from pretending everything is fine, this post is for you. A gentle reminder that you don’t have to perform for God — you can come to the Father honestly, just as you are.
I’m Tired of Pretending I’m Okay
I think a lot of us are carrying something we rarely talk about.
We smile when people ask how we’re doing. We say “I’m good” even when we’re not. We show up looking like we have it together, while inside we feel like we’re barely holding on. Many of us have become really good at pretending we’re okay.
A young adult might post the perfect picture on social media while quietly battling anxiety and loneliness.
A mom might keep going through her day — making lunches, helping with homework, smiling at church — while feeling completely drained and unseen.
A grandmother might feel the pressure to stay strong for her family, even though her heart is tired and her faith feels quiet.
We pretend for different reasons. Sometimes it’s because we don’t want to burden anyone.
Sometimes it’s because we’re afraid people will think less of us if they knew the truth. And sometimes, we’ve been pretending for so long that we’re not even sure how to stop.
But here’s what pretending does over time:
It creates distance — not only from others, but from God. When we constantly manage how we appear, we have less space to be honest with Him. We bring Him our “Sunday self” instead of our real, tired, questioning self.
God already knows the truth about you.
He sees behind the smile. He knows when you’re struggling, doubting, or simply worn out. And He is not asking you to get yourself together before you come to Him.
In fact, Scripture shows us the opposite:
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28 (KJV)
Jesus didn’t say, “Come when you’re strong.” He said come when you’re tired and carrying heavy things.
“The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.” — Psalm 34:18 (KJV)
God draws close to the honest heart — not the perfect one.
You don’t have to keep performing for God. You don’t have to pretend you’re further along than you are.
You can bring your real self to the Father — the version of you that’s tired of pretending.
Whether you’re a young adult trying to figure out who you are, a mom who feels like she’s failing at everything, or a grandmother who’s quietly carrying more than anyone knows… you are still invited.
You are invited to stop pretending.
You are invited to come honestly.
You are invited to the Father — not because you finally got it together, but because He loves you right where you are.
So if you’re tired today… really tired of keeping up the appearance that everything is fine, here’s your gentle permission:
You can lay it down.
You can be honest with God.
You can come to Him without the mask.
And you can trust that He can handle your real heart.
He’s not waiting for a better version of you.
He’s waiting for you.
