You Don’t Have to Perform for God’s Love

A lot of us grew up thinking that love had to be earned. Maybe you had to be good enough, helpful enough, or successful enough before you felt accepted. Over time, that way of thinking can quietly carry into how we relate to God.

We start performing for His love without even realizing it. Just like we talked about in Bringing Your Doubts to God Instead of Hiding Them, many of us hide parts of ourselves because we’re scared of not being enough.

But that’s not how God loves.

God Loved You Before You Were Good Enough

God didn’t wait for you to get better before He showed you love. Romans 5:8 says:

“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”

He didn’t wait until you had your life together. He didn’t wait until you stopped struggling or became more spiritual. While you were still imperfect, while you were still making mistakes — that’s when He loved you.

Your imperfections never stopped Him from loving you. They still don’t.

Performing Comes From Fear

When we don’t understand God’s love, we often fall into performing. We try hard to be “good enough” because we’re scared that if we’re not, we might lose His love or disappoint Him.

But 1 John 4:18 explains where this pressure really comes from:

“There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.”

That constant need to perform usually comes from fear. And that fear brings torment. It keeps us tired, anxious, and always feeling like we need to do more to be accepted.

You Can Stop Performing

You don’t have to keep earning something that has already been given to you. God’s love is not based on how well you’re doing or how spiritual you appear. It’s not something you have to work hard to maintain.

You can come to Him with your real life — the parts you usually hide, the struggles you’re ashamed of, and the areas where you feel like you’re falling short. You don’t have to clean yourself up first.

Because He already loves you. Not the improved version of you. Not the future version of you.

You, right now, exactly as you are.

You don’t have to perform for God’s love. You just get to receive it.
